Protecting and strengthening one of the world’s most globally significant forest regions.

The Guinean Forests Integrated Program (GFIP) is a regional program working across West Africa to halt forest loss, improve governance, and deliver lasting biodiversity, climate, and livelihood benefits.

The Guinean Forests Integrated Program is a regional initiative working to halt forest loss and strengthen sustainable forest management across West Africa.

Supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), GFIP brings together governments, regional institutions, communities, and technical partners to protect biodiversity, strengthen forest governance, and improve livelihoods.

GFIP is part of the Amazon, Congo, and Critical Forest Biomes Integrated Program under GEF, recognizing the Guinean Forests as one of the planet’s most globally significant forest systems.

Tropical Rainforest

The Upper Guinean Forest Block is a dense tropical rainforest in West Africa, stretching from Guinea to Ghana. Rich in biodiversity and unique species, it is
one of the world’s most important forest ecosystems.

Mangroves

Along West Africa's coast, mangroves connect land and sea, providing habitat for biodiversity, supporting fisheries and livelihoods, storing carbon and protecting shorelines. GFIP promotes integrated approaches that strengthen the management and resilience of these important coastal landscapes.

Freshwater Ecosystems

The rivers and watersheds of the Guinean Forests connect landscapes across communities and national borders. GFIP promotes integrated and transboundary management approaches that recognize the connections between healthy forests, freshwater systems and the people who depend on them.

Forest-Savanna Mosaics

At the forest–savanna transition, forests, woodlands, farms and open landscapes form interconnected mosaics shaped by both people and nature. GFIP supports integrated landscape management that addresses degradation while maintaining ecological connectivity and productive land uses.

Agroforestry Landscapes

Across the Guinean Forests, agricultural production is closely intertwined with forest landscapes and rural livelihoods. GFIP promotes sustainable production and agroforestry approaches that restore degraded land, maintain tree cover and reduce pressure on remaining natural forests.
