Restoration Ambition

Togo aims to restore 5,000 hectares of degraded land by Increasing local communities’ involvement in the management of gazetted forests and strengthening the effective management of community forests. The project will develop long-term financing mechanisms and investment approaches that support conservation, restoration, climate resilience, and sustainable land management while helping mobilize public and private sector resources for lasting impact.

How Togo
will achieve this

Togo will support the conservation of remaining forest patches and increased connectivity between them by advancing land-use planning, improvement of existing forest protection systems. The project will strengthen and promote existing community-based initiatives for forest conservation and for the sustainable management of agroforests.

  • Strengthening Policy and Capacity

Regulatory framework, intersectoral collaboration, and local management structures will be strengthened to develop and or revise decrees, advance communal sustainable development committees and revise Communal Development Plans.

  • Restoring Ecosystems on the Ground

Forests will be restored through the development of sustainable management of remnant native forests. The project will develop and monitor management plans for targeted Gazetted forests and support agroforestry and potential areas for the creation of new community-managed forests.

  • Building Sustainable Financing Models

Promoting sustainable and resilient financing through agroforestry value chain (coffee, cocoa, avocados, honey, spices) that support sustainable forest management and biodiversity conservation, forging private partnership agreements and enhancing microfinancing organizations.

  • Learning and Knowledge Sharing

Develop and effectively disseminate technical studies on biodiversity and sustainable agroforestry practices that supports inventories on flora and fauna, evaluate the conservation status of species and map elephant migration routes from Togo to Ghana.

The GEF-funded Guinean Forests Integrated Program (GFIP), led by Conservation International, provides a strategic platform for countries in the Guinean Forests region to jointly address cross-cutting environmental challenges by strengthening cross-border collaborative management of transboundary landscapes."
