  • Gola Rainforest National Park
  • Kambui Hills Forest Reserve

Sierra Leone is part of the Upper Guinean Forests sub-region and is committed to regional cooperation to reduce deforestation and biodiversity loss. GFIP will strengthen coordination and collaboration among state and non-state actors for effective governance of key forest landscapes and transboundary natural resources.

How Sierra Leone will achieve this

Sierra Leone will advance collaboration and coordination among state and non-state actors through learning and knowledge sharing mechanisms to strengthen the effective management and governance of protected areas, targeted community forests, advancing restoration activities, and sustainable climate resilient financing module.

  • Strengthening Policy and Protected Areas

The project will focus on strengthening policy coherence and multi-stakeholder collaboration and coordination for the effective governance and management of the Kambui Hills Forest Reserve, associated community forests and OECMs in the Greater Gola Forest landscape for effective biodiversity conservation, reducing land degradation and enhancing climate mitigation.

  • Restoration and Sustainable Livelihoods

Targeted areas degraded through artisanal mining, agricultural activities, settlement and other anthropogenic activities will be restored through natural regeneration (enrichment planting) using native tree species. Promote innovative climate-resilient and conservation-friendly livelihoods and enterprises through community-based conservation, centered on climate-smart livelihood interventions that enhance climate resilience.

  • Transboundary Watershed Management

Enhance collaboration and coordination between Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone to review and implement the strategic plan for joint cross-border natural resources management, the project will promote sustainable management of selected transboundary watersheds and forest landscapes.

  • Learning and Knowledge Sharing

Develop and disseminate learning and knowledge management products, at landscape, national and regional levels, including the promotion of traditional knowledge for sustainable natural resource management.

Overall, there is a strong commitment from Sierra Leone to continue working with Liberia to protect, conserve, and restore the Greater Gola Transboundary Landscape. For maximum impact, this necessitates that all Upper Guinean Forest countries proactively work together to further strengthen collaboration in managing and safeguarding this critical and irreplaceable forest landscape."
