Restoration Ambition

The country aims to restore 15,000 hectares of degraded land by developing long-term financing mechanisms and investment approaches that support conservation, restoration, climate resilience, and sustainable land management while helping mobilize public and private sector resources for lasting impact.

How Guinea-Bissau
will achieve this

Guinea Bissau focus is on strengthening Protected Area (PA) governance, sustainable land use within and around PAs, improving ecological connectivity inside and between PAs, engaging all relevant stakeholders – including the private sector -, strengthening policies and laws also aligning them at the sectorial, transboundary and regional level.

  • Strengthening Policy and Capacity

The project will strengthen institutions technical and financial capacities, improve gender responsive policy, promote participatory land use planning and inclusive natural resources governance and management. The project will also support the establishment and operationalization of a National-Regional-Local multi-sectorial and multi-stakeholder dialogue platform.

  • Restoring Ecosystems on the Ground

Guinea Bissau restoration initiatives will advance the implementation of the Restoration Opportunities Assessment Methodology (ROAM) and a spatial analysis focused on ecological connectivity between the PNC and other PAs/natural forests both in Guinea Bisau and Guinea-Conakry to technically feed decision-making on local afforestation.

  • Building Sustainable Financing Models

The project will assess existing policies and financial mechanisms at national level and in the Cantanhez landscape and establish innovative financial mechanisms that ensure the long-term sustainability of conservation efforts in PNC and its surrounding landscapes by exploring opportunities for Cantanhez to participate in carbon market. The project will support the negotiation and implementation of a debt for nature swap MOU.

The Guinean Forests Integrated Program exists to be leveraged by the Guinean Forest countries as a strategic platform to strengthen cross-border collaboration, improve landscape-level governance, and mobilize sustainable financing for the long-term conservation, restoration, and resilient management of the wider Guinean Forest ecosystem."
