Liberia

  • Foya Proposed Protected Area
  • Wonegizi

Liberia plays a central role in the Guinean Forests, hosting key forest landscapes and actively contributing to conservation and sustainable forest management efforts under the GFIP. The program focuses on important ecosystems such as the Gola Forest landscape and other transboundary forest areas shared with Guinea and Sierra Leone.

Restoration Ambition

Develops long-term financing mechanisms and investment approaches that support the effective co-management of transboundary water share, the Gola Forest National Park and the gazettement of proposed protected areas across Northwest (NW) Liberia Landscape, an area identified as a conservation priority for carbon and biodiversity as well as key ecosystem services such as freshwater provision.

How Liberia will achieve this

Liberia will achieve its objectives by expanding and improving protected areas, strengthening land-use planning, supporting climate-resilient livelihoods, and enhancing transboundary forest water shared management.

  • Strengthening Policy and Protected Areas

The Project will revise the existing management plan for Gola Forest National Park (97,975 ha) and advance gazettement packages for the proposed protected areas of the Foya and Kpo Mountains and Wonegizi totaling 275,937 ha. The project will also place 89,174 ha of community land under improved co-management systems.

  • Restoration and Sustainable Livelihoods

The project will support land use planning, capacity-building and creating links between local enterprises and sources of financing. The project will enhance income generating opportunities through the promotion of climate-resilient and conservation-friendly livelihoods and enterprises in cleans and communities adjacent proposed protected areas.

  • Transboundary Watershed Management

The project will address barriers pertaining to insufficient capacity for effective transboundary coordination, enhancing collaboration and coordination between Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone in promoting sustainable management of selected transboundary watersheds and forest landscapes.

  • Learning and Knowledge Sharing

Project will support the development of communication and knowledge management materials, sharing of lessons learned, and best practices through south-south exchanges and participation in national, regional, and international platforms/forums.

The Greater Gola Transboundary Landscape delivers ecosystem services that extend beyond Liberia and Sierra Leone to the wider West African region and the global community. This underscores its regional and global significance and the imperative for its continued conservation."
